PARALLEL CONSTRUCTIONS

The Paired conjuctions above can be used to combine two sentences which are parallel. To Combine the sentences using the paired conjuctions above, it is necessary to see the following rules :

C. EITHER..........OR,
D. NEITHER.........NOR,

1.Two Subjects connected by BOTH_________AND take a plural verb.

examples :

a. Both Rosa and Her mother are coming to visit us.

 ( Rosa dan ibunya akan datang mengunjungi kami ) 

b. Both my sister and my brother can play the guitar 

( Baik saudara perempuan saya dan saudara laki-laki saya bisa bermain gitar )

c. Both my girlfriend and my friends are here in my birthday party ( keduanya/baik kekasih saya dan teman-teman saya ada disini di pesta ulang tahunku )

d .Both Ron and Bob enjoy views of kuta beach.

(Baik Ron dan Bob menikmati pemandangan pantai kuta)

2. when subject are connected by only___________but also, either___________or, neither__________nor, the subject that is closer to the verb determines whether the vertb is singular

neither john,susi nor I have a good studying habit ( baik john,susi, maupun saya tidak punya kebiasaan belajar yang baik )

or plural.

examples :

A.NOT ONLY.........BUT ALSO

a. He not only read the book, but also remembered what he had read.

( dia tidak hanya membaca buku, tetapi juga mengingat apa yang sudah dia baca )

b.  Not only did he buy her a diamond ring, but he also bought her a gold watch

(dia tidak hanya membelikannya sebuah cincin berlian, tetapi dia juga membelikannya sebuah jam)

c. He coached not only basketball but also tennis.

( Dia tidak hanya pelatih basket tetapi juga tennis  )

B. EITHER...........OR

a. Either the students or the teacher is going to go to the museum tomorrow 

( baik murid-murid maupun guru akan pergi ke museum besok )

b. Either  my friends or my mother sweeps the floor every morning.

(Teman-teman saya atau ibu saya menyapu lantai itu setiap hari)

C. He wants to go either by train or by plane

 ( dia ingin pergi baik dengan kereta api atau dengan pesawat )

C.NEITHER...........NOR

a. Neither john,susi nor I have a good studying habit.

( baik john,susi, maupun saya tidak punya kebiasaan belajar yang baik ) 

b.  Yesterday, I neither slept nor ate.

(kemarin saya tidak tidur, juga tidak makan.)

c. She is neither beautiful nor smart,but everyone likes her.

(Dia tidak canttik juga pintar, tapi semua orang menyukainya)
