CONDITIONAL SENTENCES

Type	Verb form in “ IF CLAUSE “	Verb form in “ RESULT CLAUSE “	Meaning

Exemples :

I.  Conditional Sentences type I :

- I will fix you bicyle if I have a screwdriver of the proper size.

- Jack will shave today if he has a sharp razor.

II. conditional sentences type II :

- If you had enough time now, I would write to my parents.

Fact : I do not have enough time now, so I do not write to my parents.

- He would not come to your party if you did not invite him.

Fact : He will come to your party, because you invite him.

III. Conditional sentence type III :

- If you had told me about the problem, I would have helped you.

Fact : you did not tell me about the problem, so I did not help you.

- I would not have got wet yesterday if I had remembered to take umbrella with me yesterday.

Fact :  I got wet, because I did not remember to take my umbrella with me yesterday.

NOTE :

            In writing conditional sentence, we may put the “IF CLAUSE” before the “RESULT CLAUSE” and vice versa.

            However, we must put comma (,) at the end of the “RESULT CLAUSE” if the “IF CLAUSE” is put before the “RESULT CLAUSE”.

            Also, the meaning of the fact must be on the contrary with the conditional sentence. So,if the conditional sentence is in positive form,the fact will be in negative one and vice versa.

EXERCISE :

Change the verbs in brackets into correct forms, and find out the facts of the sentences if necessary.

1.      We ( not go )…………………..skating if you think the ice is dangerouslythin.

2.      If the weather ( be )……………………very bad, we would take the train.

3.      If you ( not understand )………………this math problem, I would have explained to you.

4.      You would have an accident if you ( not drive )………………………….more carefully.

5.      If I ( go ) …………………..to the post office, I would get you some stamps.

6.      If he ( make )………………………….a large sale, he would have taken this his wife out to an expensive restaurant.

7.      If he has time, he ( take )……………………..a walk in the park.

8.      If the weather were very bad, all schools ( be )………………………closed.

9.      She would have returned her new dress to the store if her husband (not like)……………………her new dress.

10.  Out car never ( eat )…………if we leave her in the house alone.
